Building the Decking Frame

I had a substantial wall at one end of my deck so I used this to support that end of the decking. The joists were laid out roughly where they needed to go to give me an idea of how it would all fit together and where the post would have to go.

The Basic Joist Frame

As you can see from the above picture most of the posts have been concreted in, There are also some short post in the near corners to take the weight off of the patio slabs.

Fitting the Noggins

The noggins are then fixed to strengthen the frame and prevent flexing. Noggins should be no more than 1200mm apart. The 45 degree joist was then mitred and fixed to form the step.

At this point the newel posts should be installed using stainless coach bolts. I was still waiting for my supplier to deliver mine! Oh well, I could still get on with fixing the decking boards but I had to temporarily fix the boards where the newel posts were going until they were delivered.

VERY IMPORTANT: Before you go on to fix the decking boards, use a good quality weed killer and then cover the ground under the deck with a weed inhibiting sheet. This will stop any weeds from growing up through the decking.
