Finishing Your Decking

The newel posts have been fitted using stainless coach bolts, I also added some noggins adjacent to the post and used some decking screws to secure the posts from two different directions.

Mounting the newel posts

A solid fix on the newel posts will make for a more secure railing.

Once the posts are in place you can fit the rails and spindles. I will not cover this here because it is quite a fiddly job and hard to explain in words! Have a look on YouTube for videos on how to do this, then prepare yourself for a frustrating few hours!

Spindle detailing

Using a good quality exterior wood glue fit the finials. In my case I went for simple acorn shaped caps. There are quite a few different styles of spindles and caps to choose from.

Edge details

Finishing the sides I found to be quite important, I had visions of someone sitting at the patio table and moving their chair back and dissapearing over the edge, so I fitted decking boards around the edge (plain side out) to prevent injury to the elderly!

Along the 45 degree edge I left the edging board flush as a sort of step onto the deck, and using a jigsaw I cut a curve on each of the end boards to tidy up the step.

Don't forget to paint sawn ends with wood preserver.
